World Environment Day 2025

World Environment Day 2025

Each year, on June 5th, millions of people around the globe come together to celebrate World Environment Day – a movement that encourages awareness and action for the protection of our planet.

At Silica Lodge Garden Centre, we believe that even the smallest garden can have a big impact. Whether you’re planting for pollinators, composting kitchen scraps, or choosing drought-tolerant plants, your garden can be a powerful part of the climate solution.

What Is World Environment Day?

World Environment Day was established by the United Nations in 1972 and has grown into one of the most significant global platforms for environmental outreach. Each year focuses on a different environmental challenge, with countries around the world hosting events, campaigns, and education initiatives.

The 2025 theme is: “Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience.”
This year’s host is Ethiopia, a country at the forefront of reforestation and sustainable land use.

But you don’t need to be part of a large project to make a difference – your garden is a great place to start.

4 Eco-Friendly Gardening Tips You Can Start Today

Save Water the Smart Way
Install a water butt to collect rainwater and water your garden during cooler hours (early morning or evening) to minimise evaporation.

Choose Drought-Tolerant Plants
Opt for sun-loving, low-maintenance plants like lavender, salvia, sedum, and herbs. These not only thrive in dry spells but also reduce your need to water.

Support Pollinators
Plant pollinator-friendly blooms like rudbeckia (Black-Eyed Susan), echinacea, and cosmos. Letting part of your garden grow wild also creates habitats for bees and butterflies.

Shop Local, Garden Greener
Buying plants and supplies locally (like from your favourite garden centre) cuts down on transport emissions and supports your local community.
