Looking for something a little different to add to your plant collection? Venus fly traps (Dionaea muscipula) are one of nature’s most fascinating carnivorous plants — and yes, you can grow your own!
Why Grow a Venus Fly Trap?
These quirky little plants aren’t just fun to watch — they’re a great way to teach kids about plant biology, natural pest control, and how amazing nature really is. Each trap is a modified leaf, snapping shut when tiny hairs are triggered by unsuspecting insects. It’s a living science experiment!
What You’ll Need:
-
A young Venus fly trap (we often have them in stock!)
-
Rainwater or distilled water – tap water is too harsh
-
A small pot with good drainage
-
Specialist compost (a mix of sphagnum moss and perlite – no fertiliser!)
-
Bright, indirect sunlight – think sunny windowsill or conservatory
Growing Tips:
Light: They love light – aim for at least 4 hours of sunlight a day.
Water: Always keep the soil damp using rainwater or distilled water. Never let them dry out.
Winter dormancy: Venus fly traps naturally go dormant in winter – this is normal! Just keep them cool and reduce watering.
Don’t trigger the traps for fun – it takes energy for the plant to close, and too much handling can weaken it.
A Natural Pest Controller
These plants eat flies, spiders, and small bugs – making them a great natural helper in the kitchen or greenhouse. Just remember: they only need to eat a couple of bugs a month, so no feeding necessary!
